A Ukrainian Soldiers Russian Beheading Video on Twitter and Reddit
Ukraine has released extraordinary video footage that appears to show Russian fighters violently beating their badly wounded commander with what appear to be shovels after dragging him off the battlefield. The incident was captured by a Ukrainian drone near Bakhmut, an eastern city where intense fighting has been raging for months. Holding their colleague by the arms and legs, four soldiers from Russia's Wagner mercenary group carry him through a landscape of demolished houses.
After that, they dump him near a barn. In a second video, three men appear to hit him repeatedly with shovels. The injured commander's fate is unknown. However, the incident is consistent with persistent reports of Russian mercenary units' low morale. Wagner troops attack in waves, as Ukrainian soldiers fighting in and around Bakhmut have described it. They are said to be threatened with death if they don't move quickly and are killed in large numbers, leaving their bodies all over the front lines.
This week, footage was taken by a Seneka special platoon drone unit. On Monday, it was made public on Ukrainian social media platforms. Volodymyr Zelenskiy, the president of Ukraine, stated in his evening address that Ukrainian units were repelling numerous Russian attempts to encircle Bakhmut and breach its defenses. We are responding to them. He declared, "I am grateful to every warrior who ensures counteraction through his resilience." Zelenskiy claimed that he and his army staff had discussed the "key issue" of ammunition supply in a Monday meeting.
Sources within Zelenskiy's own Servant of the People party suggested over the weekend that Oleksii Reznikov, Ukraine's defense minister, would be promoted. This came as a result of a corruption scandal in which the ministry paid two or three times the supermarket price for food to supply front-line troops. Reznikov appeared to be staying put on Tuesday. Before an anticipated Russian counter-offensive, members of Ukraine's national security and defense council, parliamentarians, and some Western allies argued that it was inappropriate to remove him. It's not clear how long Reznikov will be in charge.
Reznikov tweeted that he was "holding the line." He continued: I appreciate everyone's support and constructive criticism. We make inferences. We carry on with the changes. even during the conflict. The Russian military command has recently altered its strategies in Bakhmut, according to the center for defense strategies, a thinktank in Kyiv. It stated that soldiers were now engaging in continuous, rolling assaults that occasionally lasted "for 10 hours."
Together with members of Russia's 106th airborne division, Wagner detachments were attempting to storm Ukrainian positions on the northern outskirts. On the east side of the city, there was a lot of fighting. The thinktank reported that Russian forces were able to advance 500 meters in the south after a surprise attack. Bakhmut's hold on Ukraine appears to be getting weaker. If Russian troops take the T0504 highway, a crucial supply route, or break through to the Berkhiv reservoir, most studies predict that Ukrainian troops will be forced to withdraw.
In advance of the one-year anniversary of Vladimir Putin's full-scale invasion of the country on February 24, the town has little strategic value but a lot of symbolic value. The nearby cities of Sloviansk and Kramatorsk, where the majority of Ukraine's eastern forces are concentrated, have been heavily fortified. Ukraine launched two spectacular counteroffensives last autumn. It regained nearly all of the country's north-eastern Kharkiv oblast, the regional capital of Kherson in the south, as well as the surrounding territory on the right bank of the Dnipro River.
Russia, on the other hand, has regained control since then. It is moving toward Putin's goal of "liberating" the Donbas, which it has done slowly but steadily. This means taking back control of the entire province of Donetsk as well as the few remaining areas of Luhansk oblast that are still under Ukrainian control. Yevgeny Prigozhin, the Wagner group's leader, has personally led an effort to recruit criminals from Russian prisons to fight on the eastern frontline. He has claimed responsibility for Russian tactical gains in the region, such as the capture of the Ukrainian town of Soledar, which is directly north-east of Bakhmut, last month. As news of the appalling casualty rate in Ukraine makes its way back to Russia, a second prison tour to recruit additional soldiers has not been as successful.
Wagner has been designated an international criminal organization by the Ukrainian parliament and the United States. We have a small favor to ask.
